Stigma and public policies in the daily life of homeless drug users

Abstract

This article seeks to analyze the process of stigmatization of women drug users who are on the streets in a medium-sized city of Minas Gerais. The research was conducted in the context of the street and from the insertion and participant observation, being held in-depth interviews with three women by the method of life history, aiming to understand their experiences amid the process of stigmatization experienced by them in their daily lives. The gender violence on the streets, the consumption of alcohol and other drugs, as well as the relationships with professionals who work in the field of public policies, were the main aspects approached. Thus, it reaffirms the need and urgency that the actions of social protection of this public are more qualified and seek to deconstruct stigmas, by restructuring public policies in the area and by the growing debate about the oppressions related to poverty and gender.
