Emotional experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic:

a psychoanalytical view

Keywords: psychoanalysis; psychological suffering; pandemic

Abstract

This article, based on the psychoanalytic viewpoint, has the purpose to reflect about the emotional impacts caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the following health crisis. It is presented a bibliographic review about what has been produced about this issue, highlighting that psychic suffering mobilized during the pandemic has been explained by two main factors: the fear of the disease, empowered by the excess of information or desinformation itself, and by the distress caused by social isolament. In sequence, it is established a dialogue between the present situation and Freud’s life and work, resuming mainly his papers about death, war and psychic suffering. As the papers were a way to Freud elaborate what was occuring that time, writting about the coronavirus pandemic enable us to look in our own emotions, accept and reframe them.
