Aspects of the playfulness of children and adolescents during social distancing

Abstract

Covid-19 is a recent disease that has appeared due to the spread of a new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) identified in Wuhan, China. With a clinical picture ranging from asymptomatic infections to severe respiratory conditions, the disease has altered people's lives due to measures of social distancing. This work investigated the perception of 62 parents or guardians about aspects of playing by children and adolescents during the period of social distance, using an electronic survey. It was found that children and adolescents have used more toys and electronic games, for a longer time when compared to the period before the pandemic, and that parents and siblings being the people who most participated in recreational activities. The importance of playing games and electronic games for the mental health of children and adolescents is emphasized, although the need to maintain a routine and monitor the use of electronics is emphasized.
